The
Zanskar massif lies adjacent to the
Nun-Kun
massif. Most frequented area in this group
is along the Drung-Drung Glacier below Penzi-La,
on the Kargil Zanskar road. Its base camp
can be approached in a day's trek from the
road head. The best known peaks in the group
are Z-2 (6175m), Z-3(3270m) and Z-8 (6050m).
In addition there are many unnamed peaks in
the area in the altitude range of 5000m to
6000m.
The climbing period in the region extends
from early June to mid October, the main
climbing period being June-August when most
of the Himalayas remain inaccessible due to
the monsoon elsewhere. The Ladakh Himalaya
however remains unaffected.
CENTRAL
HIMALAYAS
The
ranges of the Great Himalayas- Zanskar, Pir
Panjal (or Shivalik) and Dhauladhar provide
the State of its mountainous character.
The main peaks of this region include, Leo
Pargil (6791m) above sea level, Kinner
Kailash (6050m) with Jorkaden(6473m) to the
immediate south and Raldang(5499m) and
Phawarang (6439m).The twin peaks of
Gushu(5607m) and Pishu(5672m) are situated
between Sarahan and Pin-Parbati Pass.
Itinerary
Day 1:
Arrival in Delhi. meet and transfer to
Hotel. Overnight stay at Hotel.
Day 2: Train to Chandigarh, jeep to
Pinjore, stay overnight at Hotel.
Day 3: Jeep to Manali, on arrival
check in at Hotel. Overnight at Hotel.
Day 4: Day at Leisure in Manali,
Overnight at Hotel.
Day 5: Day free in the Kullu valley,
to explore the surrounding region.
Day 6: Travel by jeep over 3978 metre
Rohtang Pass, the gateway to the Lahaul
valley, to Darcha.
Day 7: Trek to Rarig, a prosperous
farming village.
Day 8: Trek to Zanskar Sumdo, where
we camp by the shore of the raging Barai
Nallah.
Day 9: After crossing the Barai
Nallah by cable bridge, we trek to Shingo La
base camp.
Day 10: Rest and acclimatization day.
Day 11: Trek over 5080 metre Shingo
La to the high pasture of Lakang.
Day 12: Continue down valley in the
shadow of the massive arrow-shaped
Gumbaranjon (peak) to Kargyak, one of the
highest villages in Zanskar.
Day 13: Trek to the village of Testha.
Day 14: Trek to Purni, where the
Kargyak and Tsarap rivers merge to form the
mighty Lingti Chu.
Day 15: Trek to Phugtal gompa, one of
the world's most spectacular sights. Its
location, spilling down a sheer cliff face
from the mouth of a massive cave, is a
staggering one.
Day 16: Trek to the friendly village
of Tangtse, at the base of the gorge leading
to Phirtse La.
Day 17: Trek to Shingsaw, the base
camp for our pass crossing.
Day 18: Trek over Phirtse La (5350
metres) to base camp.
Day 19: Trek to Chumik Marpo.
Day 20: Trek to Sarchu Serai, on the
banks of the Yunan river.
Day 21: Trek to Kilang Sarai, where
we meet the Manali to Leh military road.
Day 22: Travel by jeep to Keylong,
the capital and administrative centre of Lahaul.
Day 23: Continue by jeep over Rhotang
Pass to Manali.
Day 24: Rest day in Manali.
Day 25: Jeep to Kullu, then a
spectacular flight to Delhi, on arrival
check in at Hotel. Stay overnight at Hotel.
Day 26: Depart-Delhi, transfer to
airport for flight to onwards journey.
